Why did Apu get removed from The Simpsons? Once a fan-favorite, Apu began appearing less and eventually stopped speaking after 2017. His quiet removal sparked widespread debate over racial stereotypes. In this post, we’ll explore the reason, reactions, and whether Apu might return.
Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is a recurring character in the famous animated sitcom The Simpsons series. First appearing in “The Telltale Head” (1990), he is portrayed as a highly educated Indian immigrant in his 30s, originally from Rahmatpur, West Bengal. The character owns a convenience store called the Kwik‑E‑Mart, which is located across the street from the Simpson family home.
Apu is memorable for his polite, hardworking, and calm personality. He often uses the iconic catchphrase “Thank you, come again” in a thick, exaggerated Indian accent. In terms of voice acting, he was played by Hank Azaria. His role lasted from 1990 and ended in 2017.

“Much Apu About Nothing” - Season 7, Episode 23

There was no official statement announcing Apu’s removal, though. The last time we can hear Apu on screen with voiced dialogue is in The Serfsons (Season 29, Episode 1) in 2017. After the episode, the character just quietly disappeared without explanation.
In January 2020, Hank Azaria confirmed he would no longer voice Apu, saying: “All we know is I won’t be doing the voice anymore, unless there’s some way to transition it or something.”
In terms of replacement, as far as we know, no actor has officially taken over the role. There were rumors in 2021 and 2022 about the show potentially reworking Apu with a South Asian writer or voice actor, but nothing was confirmed or followed up publicly.
So, what is the reason Apu quietly disappeared, you may ask? The short answer is that his portrayal was increasingly seen as racially insensitive. It all started in 2017, when comedian Hari Kondabolu released a documentary titled The Problem with Apu. In the film, people of South Asian descent shared how Apu’s exaggerated accent and stereotypical mannerisms had become a source of mockery in their real lives.

For decades, the character was one of the few South Asian characters on U.S. television. Yet, he was voiced by a white actor and built largely around clichés. The thick accent, the overused catchphrase, and the convenience store job are all widely viewed as lazy and reductive stereotypes.
Kondabolu also pointed out that this “brownface” portrayal contributed to real-world bullying and racial stereotyping. In reality, many South Asian Americans were victims of such mockery. Public figures like Kal Penn recalled being bullied at school by classmates mimicking Apu’s accent, while Hasan Minhaj said he was repeatedly called “Apu” and made to feel ashamed of his identity.
On another note, some argue that removing the character entirely is not necessary. That doesn’t mean the hurt felt by many South Asians is invalid. Instead, they believe in reformation. Instead of erasing the character, they felt The Simpsons could’ve reimagined the Indian character.
Apu’s future remains uncertain and unresolved. All we know is that The Simpsons initially rejected the criticism. There was no clear apology or acknowledgement on screen, but the issue was briefly addressed in the 2018 episode No Good Read Goes Unpunished, where the show appeared to downplay the backlash. Later, creator Matt Groening said people “love to pretend they’re offended.”
Meanwhile, the voice of Apu took the opposite position. “I’ve given this a lot of thought… and I’m perfectly willing to step aside,” Azaria said. He also stated that the character’s future should be shaped by South Asian voices, not by the original creative team alone.
So, will there be any chance for Apu to return to The Simpsons? Realistically, the chances are very slim. It has been almost a decade since that event and we only saw some silent cameos appearing in crowd scenes. No words spoken.
There is also no hint from the showrunners that the character will be revived. Matt Groening once mentioned in an interview that they “have plans for Apu,” but nothing has aired yet.

Should there be a comeback, we expect to see a complete reimagining with new cultural input. And with former voice actor Hank Azaria stepping away permanently, it would also need a new performer.
Notes: If you want to do a quick check-in, Apu is still technically the owner of Kwik-E-Mart. Maybe, for now, he’s still scanning items... but on mute.
That concludes our article on Why did Apu get removed from The Simpsons. To sum it up, Apu was quietly retired following years of criticism around racial stereotyping. While it might feel abrupt to longtime fans, the decision, especially after Hank Azaria stepped down, seems final. And if a comeback ever happens, it would require a full reimagining with authentic South Asian input, which the show hasn’t committed to.
